Alternatives to Dirty Gold
There are some retailers and other organizations that are pushing mining companies to commit themselves to higher standards.
Tiffany & Co. Stakes Bold Position on Mining Reform
March 24, 2004. In an open letter advertisement in the Washington Post, Tiffany & Co, one of the world's leading jewelry companies, opposed a silver mine that threatens an important wilderness area and called for mining reforms it believes are urgently needed. Michael Kowalski, the Chairman and CEO of Tiffany & Co, stated that the company is motivated by consumer demand.
"We've always believed that we have an implicit contract with our customers. They demand that Tiffany products, precious metals and gemstones be extracted in environmentally and socially responsible ways."
This is the first time that a major jewelry company has taken a stance regarding the gold mining industry.
How can you help create alternatives to dirty gold?
- Support the No Dirty Gold campaign. Asserting your demands as a consumer will help lead to an alternative to dirty gold.
- Recycle old jewelry. You can have old rings melted down to make new ones. Support jewelers that offer products made with recycled gold.
- Buy vintage or antique jewelry.
