Class Rings and No Dirty Gold Campaign Activity

Deadline for CHANGE Training is April 1.

Oxfam America is accepting applications for the CHANGE Initiative, its national student leadership program. CHANGE offers US college students entering their sophomore or junior year the opportunity to become effective social change agents. CHANGE Leaders are exposed to the international developmental issues that concern Oxfam's work for social justice, and apply their skills and insights to run Oxfam campaigns on their campuses and in their communities.

This year CHANGE Leaders who decide to work on Extractive Industries can chose between the Class Rings Campaign and Oxfam America's new CHANGE Mining initiative.

Applications are due on April 1, 2006. Selected students are required to participate in a week-long training in Boston, July 22 to 28, 2006, organized and paid for by Oxfam America. You are strongly encouraged to apply on-line at: http://www.oxfamamerica.org/change.  Students interested in CHANGE Mining should select the Extractive Industries focus. If you have any questions please call Paul Bugala at (202) 375-4145 or email pbugala@oxfamamerica.org.

NDG Activists Take Macalester, University of Utah and UT Austin by Storm

No Dirty Gold activists on campuses across the country are finding creative ways to spread the word about the impacts of irresponsible mining and the rights of indigenous peoples. At Macalester in Minneapolis, Jessica Mowles made a series of presentations, screened the Price of Gold and tabled extensively on campus during the fall and winter. At the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Tim Stout has tabled extensively, lead NDG workshops at conferences and is working on a documentary about communities impacted by gold mining. And a new NDG group at the University of Texas in Austin is kicking its campaign off this Valentine's Day by suggesting alternatives to gold jewelry gifts while it tables and going door to door introducing Austin-area jewelers to the campaign and the Golden Rules.
